The most prestigious antique dealers and galleries gathered to show the best antiques available in the Argentine market. The Antiques Fair has become a classic Buenos Aires event. It was organized by the Association of Friends of the National Museum of Decorative Arts.
Buenos Aires, November 2007. The Association of Friends of the National Museum of Decorative Arts (AAMNAD) organized the third edition of the Antiques Fair, the most awaited-for event by collectors of decorative arts. The Fair is already a classic feature of Buenos Aires’ active cultural life.
The 2007 Antiques Fair was part of the festivities honoring the 70th anniversary of the National Museum of Decorative Arts. As in previous editions, the Fair took place at the Palais de Glace, strategically located in the heart of Buenos Aires’ cultural district.
This year the Fair grew in several aspects. The grounds occupied more than 2,100 sq. meters, which allowed room for seven new exhibitors. In addition to the La Plata Fine Arts Museum invited by Fundación BAPRO, the Tigre Art Museum also exhibited part of its collections, less than an year after its creation.
In addition, the Fair’s Vetting Committee saw an increase in the number of its members, to include new specialists in antique jewelry, textiles, old books and documents and works on paper.
This last edition of the Antiques Fair enjoyed additional support from new sponsors who actively participate in our community’s cultural life: Petrobras, Bodegas Chandon and Aeropuertos Argentina 2000. These companies have joined other corporations who provide continued support to the Fair: Banco Galicia, Chubb Seguros, Sullair Argentina and La Nación. It is worth mentioning that this Fair was also sponsored by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Religious Affairs, the National Secretariat for Culture, the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, the Undersecretariat of Tourism of the City of Buenos Aires and FADAM (the Argentine Federation of Associations of Museum Friends).
Approximately 20,000 local and foreign visitors toured the 2007 Fair. Many of them purchased works of art of utmost quality. Others just enjoyed a tour of the stands in an atmosphere full of history and tradition.
The Cultural Extension Program was rich and varied. Presentations enjoyed wide audiences, which, in some cases, exceeded the scheduled capacity. Guided tours were very popular, not only among ordinary visitors and students and professionals related to Decorative Arts, Architecture and design but also by foreign groups specialized in cultural tourism who requested special visits.
The “Reinterpretation of a piece of Period Furniture” contest, sponsored by Banco Galicia, attracted the attention of a large young audience, interested in determining how modern design could be used to reshape 18th century pieces belonging to the Decorative Arts Museum.
As a whole, the Fair was a complete success. ANMAD’s objective to promote and assist the Museum to attain its goal was achieved, as the Fair fostered conservation of its collections and a greater knowledge of decorative arts in Argentina.
To know and appreciate our past helps to build a better future.
